Postcards

Picture
Picture
Postcards can be an effective form of communication between two characters because it provides an honest glimpse into each other's lives, without the fear of external judgement. However, 1984 is the exception to this rule as all mail is read by the oppressive Big Brother. Therefore, Julia and Winston must use code to plan their meeting (the capital letters spell "THE WOODS" and "ONE OCLOCK"). Postcards are also an opportunity to adopt the language of the text, such as newspeak in 1984 with "plusgood" and "plushappy."
